BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Boston television station WWOO became the first digital television station in the United States to experiment with 5G broadcasting.

As opposed to live streaming a television newscast, 5G broadcasting could be used by anyone with a smart phone, even without cell service or a SIM card.

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) granted WWOO an experimental license to test the proof of concept for 5G broadcasting. CEO of XGEN Network Frank “Super Frank” Copsidas came to the WWOO studio to test out this new technology.

“We earned an experimental license from the FCC to launch the most exciting day for us for the last year,” said Copsidas. “Even if your cell phone goes down because cell service goes down, broadcast continues. It is not dependent on cell service.”

Even though it won’t have a practical use for many years, this new technology could also give broadcasters the ability to send emergency alerts to citizens without the need for cell service.
